Another rainy, windy, chilly morning greeted the 17 teams participating in the Paycheck Open tournament in Havre de Grace, Maryland today. A major cold front moved through the area overnight and the water temp dropped around 8 degrees from last week. One thing was for sure…you wouldn’t see 2 or 3 twenty plus pound bags at weigh-in today. and you probably wouldn’t see a 6 pound lunker, either. Wrong on both counts. How about five bags over 20 pounds, a 7.62 lunker, and 4 big smallmouth, 2 around 5 pounds! The Upper Bay continues it’s stronghold on the Big Bass of the East title as 225.37 total pounds of bass were weighed in, all of which were released alive.
Finishing in 5th place were Bill McDermott and Mike Gambill with 20.96 pounds including 2 largemouths that were pushing 6 pounds apiece. In 4th place were Richard Cox and Bill Rogers who put a 6.03 largemouth on the board backed up by 2 giant smallmouth for a total of 21.78.
Third place finishers Kevin Simpson and Kelby Mowery used a simple equation to weigh in 22.54 pounds…40HP aluminum jet boat + years of experience + uncanny knack of locating bass = PAYCHECK! They pocketed $262 for finishing 3rd.
Jack Rinkers and Bill Gallagher also thought they were on Lake Champlain as they carried a mixed bag to the scales that weighed 23.92 pounds. Resting comfortably against a 4 pound smallie in the bottom of their bag was the tournament lunker…a stellar 7.62 largemouth. Here’s the breakdown of their PAYCHECK: $550 for second place, $170 for lunker, $70 second place Option Pot for a total of $790. They also received a nice engraved walnut plaque.
John Vanore and Jess Salmon overcame a motor glitch today long enough to land in the winners circle today. A mega-weight of 25.46 pounds was just enough to nudge ahead of Jack and Bill for the victory. In addition to 2 plaques, John and Jess were awarded $1100 for the victory and another $170 for the 1st place Option Pot bounty for a grand total of $1270! Way to go!
Here’s the breakdown of the payout:
17 teams @$125 entry – 10% = $112.50 x 17 = $1912 total payout
1st $1100, 2nd $550, 3rd $262.50 (whoops! I owe Kevin and Kelby 50 cents!
Lunker-17 teams x $10 = $170
