The Paycheck Winter Open launched from the Wellwood Club in Charlestown, MD on Saturday, January 18. The tournament was relocated due to renovations being made to the ramp at Anchor Marina.
The air temp was well below freezing when the teams launched and remained there all day. The nasty 20MPH winds only added to the misery.
Two gunslingers began the duel at 7:15, each choosing different weapons for the battle. Although the weather was bitter, both Mike Piccolo and Brian LaClair remained focused throughout the day. They needed to be on top of their game as neither of their partners were able to attend.
Both guys remarked how active the fish were, however and each caught lots of bass. After their boats were pulled out of the water the scales were set up and both combatants weighed their fish.
Brian weighed first and a very respectable limit of fish spilled from his weigh-in bag into the tub. His largest bass weighed 4.05 and his total weight was 14.62. Being from Denton, MD Brian would have preferred to run to one of the Eastern Shore rivers but was still able to catch a lot of fish. He received $40 so he got a third of his money back.
Mike weighed next and also produced a nice limit of winter bass. He had one particularly nice fish that weighed 5.21 pounds. It was caught about 9:00AM and wound up being the tournament lunker. That bass proved to be the difference as his other fish closely equaled Brian’s. Mike’s overall weight of 17.46 gave him the victory. Mike won $182 in all.
