22 teams entered the final PAYCHECK/Premier Marine tournament held at Tydings Park in Havre De Grace on September 21, 2013. The Lunker Award was sponsored by John Hansen’s www.remotemechanic.com. Miss Utility was the host sponsor of the event.
With a full moon and an approaching front moving in many teams were expecting the bass to be feeding big time as the fall transition has begun. Let’s face it…the weights on the Upper Bay have been way down in the past month and the bass needed to be kick-started it seems.
The wind, as always, was a challenge as it carried the rain front along with it. However, 12 of the teams were able to produce a limit, some larger than others which is always the case.
Some real nice fish were presented to the scales at weigh-in. Walt Ross and Ron Galloway set the remotemechanic.com lunker bar high as they placed a huge 6.14 largemouth in the basket. A couple of other teams selected a bass over 5 pounds as their big bass.
Dan Kardash and Marty Baker were the first team out of the money with a nice limit weighing 15.18 pounds. Lately, that would have been the winning weight on the bay.
Ken Molz and Dan Brockmeyer cashed their second check of the season with 5 fish that weighed 17.43 pounds earning them $210.
John Shumate and Donald Haskins, Jr teamed up to claim 3rd place today edging Ken and Dan with 17.72 pounds. They received plaques and $390.
Mike Sentore and Sean McKee capped a stellar PAYCHECJK/Premier Marine season with a second place finish, more than enough to wrap up the Team of the Year for this division. Their weight today was 18.21 pounds good for plaques and $850 in prize money.
Things weren’t looking so rosy for Kevin Simpson and Sam Rineer. Kevin exited his tree stand a little earlier than expected on Friday as the ladder broke and he tumbled to the ground . He began the tournament with back and neck pain. To make matters worse, they drew the last number and had to watch not only 21 other boats in our tournament leave ahead of them but also a small club tournament that came out of nowhere with no lights on half the boats weaving through our staged boats that were blasting off…a potentially dangerous situation.
At the scales, however it was evident that Kevin and Sam’s day went better than it started as they carried a monster bag of bass to the weigh-in area. What a sack of fish! The digital readout on the scale rested at 23.21 pounds. That’s more like a pre-spawn weight! The also had a 7.05 pound largemouth earning them the remotemechanic.com lunker award. In all they were awarded plaques and $2015 in prize money. Congratulations!
John Hansen from www.remotemechanic.com wants to contribute $75 to each lunker award next year but we need to feed him a little auto/truck service. Remember he and his guys will come to you to take care of any repairs or routine maintenance.
