No one could have foreseen what was in store for the ten teams that were on hand at Glen Cove Marina on November 8th. It was a little windy but overall just a nice, cool fall day.
A couple teams had pre-fished successfully for largemouth during the week but the Friday evening cold front shut them down like a slamming door.
Smallmouth…and plenty of them…were the story on this day.
PAYCHECK Angler’s of the Year Terry Nolt and Justin Martin weighed a fabulous bag of smallies weighing 17.87 pounds, usually enough to win every tournament on Conowingo. However, they placed third today.
Ken Klinedinst and Andy Crouse overcame some early morning engine issues but McGyver’d a way to keep fishing. They had a great day and came back ½ hour early in case they had any further complications. They dropped a stellar 5-bass limit on the scale that weighed 19.26 pounds, all smallmouth. They wound up in second place and won a total of $450.
Josh Headley’s regular partner couldn’t get off work for this tournament so Josh decided to go it alone.
It worked out for him because, as the champion, he did not have to share the winnings with anyone!
Josh caught a huge limit of smallmouth that weighed an unbelievable 21.74 pounds! He reportedly caught these fish in an area where he traditionally catches largemouth, but balls of baitfish were constantly moving in and out according to his Lowrance and the smallmouth were right behind them.
Josh mentioned that everytime he would see a pod of baitfish on his screen he would see dead or injured minnows floating to the surface so he assumed it was due to the smallies feeing on the baitball.
Including Double Up, Option Pot, lunker, and 1st place prize money Josh pocketed $1140. Congratulations!
The final PAYCHECK Open on Conowingo this year is Saturday, November 22 out of Glen Cove Marina.
