WOW! Another windy, windy day on the Upper Chesapeake Bay as the 1st PAYCHECK His/Hers or Adult/Youth tournament got underway on May 25th out of Anchor Marine.
All you heard at the ramp this morning were moans of “Why did you drag me out of bed at 3:00AM to fish in the wind and cold?”, or “I’m hungry and haven’t had my coffee yet!”.
Then the women told the guys to shut up and stop whining.
Surprisingly 9 teams showed up to fish this tournament, a few more than another Open tournament drew also at Anchor. After a few brief rules boat numbers were called and the tournament was underway.
I’ve held hundreds of tournaments at Anchor and can honestly say that I have never seen the water as low as it was this morning. I now know what the end of the ramp looks like. Two days of strong Northwest winds had blown the water out almost completely.
The scales were officially opened at 12:30PM in case anyone wanted to weigh in early due to fatigue or dealing with the wind. A few teams weighed before 1:30 but almost everyone was in around 2:00PM.
With lots of trophies and prize money up for grabs it was pretty tense at weigh-in. There was even some hair pulling, eye scratchin’, and name calling going on. Finally the girls stepped to weigh in their big bass which stopped all the complainin’.
Danny Miller and Jason Barrow weighed in 12.52 pounds to finish in 4th place, but Danny caught the Youth Big Bass of the tournament which weighed 3.44 pounds. He received a nice trophy. He also weighed in the biggest (and only) panfish, a white perch to claim the Miss Utility Panfish Prize, a $50 gift certificate to Home Depot.
Coming out of retirement as a team was the husband and wife team of Lynn and Mike Rhodes. Always a threat in the early-to-mid 2000’s, Lynn and Mike posted a 3rd place finish today with 5 quality bass that weighed 13.92 pounds. Lynn’s 4.11 lunker gave her the early lead for Ladies Big Bass. Their finish earned them 2 trophies and $100 in cash.
Janette Knoop and Ken Wood, Jr were unable to fish their prime honey hole due to wind, muddy water and no water due to an extremely low tide. Ken said they just went junk fishing cast toward new objects every 15 minutes or so until they achieved their final weight…16.42 pounds. While Janette’s individual big bass fell just short they had the overall Big Bass of the tournament which weighed 4.80 pounds. They collected a total of 3 trophies and $290 in prize money.
Amanda and Clyde Brown hauled in a bunch of big bass today and it was hard to pick their lunker. They decided on one that Amanda caught which weighed 4.43 pounds and earned her the Ladies Big Bass trophy. They weighed in a limit of 5 bass which totaled 19.49 pounds giving them the victory. Amanda and Clyde were presented with 2 trophies and $500 in cash. Their son Nate fished a tournament out of Havre de Grace today and won that giving the Brown household a clean sweep today.
The next scheduled His/Hers and Adult /Youth tournament is scheduled for September 14th out of Tydings Park in Havre de Grace, but keep your eyes on the schedule as I may try to put another one in July where we will again roll the dice on the weather.
Special thanks to Tony Osborne for offering mechanical assistance to one of our teams this morning.
